Vera Deirdre is the early folk project of Rebecca Schoenecker from Laughing Eye Weeping Eye, with Dan Fischer on woodwinds and harmonium, and Ken Zanowski on drums. Performing and releasing music in Milwaukee between 2001 and 2006, their music is somewhere between a waltz and a funeral march. Their cover of Little Red Riding Hood was recently used in the trailer for the film by Tate Bunker Little Red.
A limited edition tape (with MP3 download) compilation with mostly unreleased tracks by Hairy Spider Legs artists Spires That In The Sunset Rise, The Cherry Blossoms, Ora Cogan, and Laughing Eye Weeping Eye, with other folks we love including Arrington de Dionyso, Village of Spaces, Ruby Fray, Urarider (Caethua/Mother of Fire), Marmits, Giant Squid Autopsy, The VonVolsung Sisters, Yes Yes, Green Thrift Grocery, and Knives of Spain. Includes an amazing fold-out sleeve of beast drawings by Rebecca from Laughing Eye Weeping Eye.
Filmed in half-lit basements, last minute venues, and dive bars, this 45-minute 2012 tour diary captures experimental and folk music from the U.S. Southeast. While bringing attention to the strange beauty of the underground music scene, this documentary also highlights the eclectic talents of its performers. From plein air painters to puppet-makers, alien poets, shamans, and baroque clad a capella singers, a variety of genius reveals itself intimately and unexpectedly. The film features clips with: The Cherry Blossoms, Healing Trapeze, Umin, Jane Roberts, Yes Yes, Pilgrim, Grandpa Egg, John Flannelly, and The VonVolsung Sisters. Ultimately inspiring and multifaceted, these artists reinvigorate the realm of live performance and encourage us all to embrace the odd brilliance within. DVD. See the trailer here.
